How do we design a product for kids living in space crunched urban Indian homes that supports play while also addressing their daily requirements of sitting, storage and study?
Cartoy, a mobile toy storage furniture, designed to be moved around the house as a play activity by kids, with the ease of carrying their belongings with them on the go. Designed for 'Takshaka' based out of Gurgaon in India, as a part of my final year Diploma project at NID, it was awarded winner for 'The Park Elle Decor' student contest in 2013.
The furniture piece has a storage space, a removable toy bin, whose lid also acts as a writing surface, and a seat making it a personalised piece of furniture addressing a child’s basic daily activities of sitting, playing and studying.
Besides its functional relevance, the play factor associated with the furniture makes collecting back the toys, usually spread around the house, an attractive proposal for kids
Owing to its functional value of storage and a generous seating provision, Cartoy is not constrained to kids and remains relevant even after they grow up.
Cartoy ,a mini vehicle with storage was made sturdy and strong enough to take rough use by kids . An understructure in steel was made over which veneered ply structure was mounted. Since this was the first prototype of the design, investment in mould was not done and instead made using manual processes.
