How can a consumer products company become more sustainable throughout its process of design, manufacturing and selling products?
Objective
With the growing consciousness of consumers all over the world as well as interest from investors, stakeholders and government to be a more sustainable company, GCPL had taken an initiative to launch the first phase of inquiry.
As the lead for project, the challenge for me was to plan and launch an inquiry into what are the current systems and practices of the company across multiple brands, its impact on the environment and society at each stage and finally to reimagine interventions collaboratively with various departments throughout the ecosystem.
Approach
This initiative being first of its kind, it required a cultural shift within the company and continued effort for an extended period of time from all internal stakeholders. The most crucial and critical step taken was to map the current ecosystem of a product lifecycle at GCPL from its inception to end of life of all its products. This was done in collaboration with various department representatives involved at various stages of product lifecycle in the company which not only helped break the silos but also orient all the stakeholders towards singular vision and dialogue for a sustainable future of the company.
-
In-depth research on peer fmgc Cos, Government mandates, NGOs and International standards was done to identify critical environmental issues, targets and solutions being set by the industry and its impact on business, environment and consumers
-
Research and analysis of internal GCPL processes, environmental and social impact at each stage was done to evaluate our current targets and efforts with help of internal stakeholders
-
Information and insights were presented to internal stakeholders during collaborative workshops for next steps.
Outcome
Although in its initial stages, the project helped all the major stakeholders to evaluate how is the company doing as compared to its peers and world targets in terms of sustainability and arrive at consensus on what does the future of FMCG for Godrej looks like. It helped them orient towards design thinking led transformation at ecosystem level and kickstart the long journey towards sustainable design and manufacturing for the company.
"Thank you Shrestha for driving this important initiative. The systems-led thinking that you are propagating and the extensive groundwork that you have done will really help us. Also, greatly appreciate the support and feedback from all the team members. This is very important – not just for our business, but for our future generations. And while in some areas we are behind, I do believe that with our collective efforts, we will be able to catch up quickly. "
